• Grab bins, a marker, and contractor bags.

The Sorting Rule

For each item, one question: have I used this in the last 12 months, and would I buy it again? If it's no to both, it goes to Donate or Haul. Don't overthink it — speed keeps you honest.

Go Category by Category

• Tools & hardware: keep what works, toss duplicates and dead batteries, donate extras.
• Sports & outdoor: be honest about the hobbies you've actually kept up.
• Seasonal & decor: broken lights and brittle decorations go.
• Auto: old tires, dried fluids, and parts for a car you no longer own.
• Paint & chemicals: set these aside — they need your city's hazardous-waste depot, not the truck.
• "I'll fix it someday": if it's been a year, today is someday.

What to Do With the Junk
